Tribute: James R. ("Jimmy") Guthrie James R. ("Jimmy") Guthrie died on August 19, 2003. Services were held on August 21, 2003, at the First United Methodist Church in Humbolt, Tennessee. Mr. Guthrie was born on December 10, 1910, and would have been 93 this coming December (2003).

Jimmy Guthrie is survived by his wife, Margaret, three sons, two daughters, eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Jimmy and Margaret were married for 62 years.

A past president of the Southern and Tennessee Checker Associations, Jimmy was also active at the national level. He was a past winner of the ACF Three-Move National Title in the Major Division and became a life member of the ACF.

Margaret and Jimmy traveled everywhere to tournaments. Since a daughter was an airline stewardess for Delta, they got to fly free! Jimmy probably played in more tournaments than anyone else during his playing days. On one of his trips, he visited the Holy Land and played a game of checkers at Jacob's Well.

I will miss you, Jimmy, as will your family, your many friends, and checker players everywhere.

From Al Darrow, ACF Bulletin Editor: I saw Mr. Guthrie at the Third International Match at Bournemouth, England, in 1973. He was a non-playing coach but was pressed into service to replace Walter Hellman in the final round against Ivor Edwards. Even though he lost both games, he fought gallantly and saved our team from forfeiting because of Hellman's illness.
