National Tournament Awarded to Medina, Ohio

The deadline for National Tournament bids was December 31st, with Medina the winner. The other alternative was Las Vegas (by Gerry Lopez), but the bid amount was smaller. I was also in communication with several hotels in the Chicago area, but received no bid money. Furthermore, the Chicago-area hotel room rates would have cost $75-$100 per night, which I don't think many would go for.

I live approx. 45 minutes from Medina. The Traveler's Choice used to be a Best Western (I think) and has many guestrooms. Three checker events were played here in 2005 (Northern States, Moiseyev-Beckwith Ohio match, Ohio State tournament) with good reviews of the fine playing room. The manager of the hotel loved having us, and has always provided complimentary meeting rooms. They will also offer a daily complimentary breakfast, which they don't normally do for their other patrons. For a larger National tournament, we will need to make use of some of their larger meeting rooms. The rate on the sleeping rooms will be $33.00 plus tax. The hotel contains a bar and outdoor swimming pool.

Nearby Attractions

Many restaurants are located at this interchange, including within walking distance --Dairy Queen, Cracker Barrel, Bob Evans, Waffle House, Buffalo Wild Wings, Alexander's (a great find!), Lou's Landing Grill and more. (No, the last two restaurants are not owned by Ohio's own Alex Moiseyev and Louis Cowie ). A large antique mall is nearby. The Lodi outlet mall and Strongsville mall are both 15 minutes away by interstate.

Cleveland has many attractions, including Lake Erie, Jacob's Field, Tower City, Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland Zoo, Great Lakes Science Center, Playhouse Square, Geauga Lake Amusement Park, and the John G. White chess & checker collection at the Cleveland Public Library.

Airport Transportation to Medina

Airport Direct Transportation (440) 479-1515
$55 (with tax) per trip from Cleveland Hopkins airport to Medina. $65 from Akron-Canton airport to Medina.

Ace Taxi (216) 361-4700
$54 from Cleveland Hopkins airport to Medina, or $95 roundtrip.

I also contacted Hopkins Shuttle service (in airport terminal). Medina is not on their regular route, and cost is $80 (1-6 people) one-way.

Unfortunately, the airport situation is not ideal for those who wish to fly, since Medina is in another county. I may be able to assist with rides for a few travelers who arrive on the weekend. (Please contact me at and we can discuss).
