State Match Titles

It seems that Louis Cowie, veteran master player and problemist, has succeeded at reviving the concept of a state match championship. There are a few references to Ohio State matches in old ACF bulletins during the late 1970s. Louis was unchallenged for the Ohio match title since his match with Gene Zuber in 1984 until my match with Louis over this past winter. Michael Holmes liked the concept and arranged a Kentucky Match title. Michael informed me this week that he had just defeated Jonathon Chappell by a score of 6-4 and 9 draws. Congratulations to Michael! Young Jonathon shows much promise by making this a close match.

I talked to Alex by phone the other night. (His e-mail is down indefinitely.) Earlier this year, Alex Moiseyev had challenged me for the Ohio Match Title. We will play the full smorgasbord: six games GAYP, six games 3-move, and six 11-man ballot! The match will take place Labor Day weekend, September 3-5, at the Traveler's Choice Hotel in Medina, OH, right off I-71. The Ohio State Tournament will take place the following weekend at the same venue.

I have already received inquiries and orders about receiving the games. We will be putting together a "Games of the Ohio Matches" publication to include annotated games of Cowie-Zuber, Beckwith-Cowie, and Beckwith-Moiseyev. Games from this year's Ohio Tournament Masters will be included. More details will follow.

I think this will be my toughest test yet, given the caliber of my opponent and the format. Nevertheless, it should be excellent preparation for the Qualifying Tournament in Prague.
