Updates on World Qualifier Tournament and ICHF Repairs

The annual World Qualifier Tournament is currently scheduled to be played September 1-4, 2009 in Isle of Wight, England. The GAYP event was rescheduled one day later than the original bid to address the concern of unavailable hotel rooms on the preceding weekend. The United States (via ACF and ICHF) will send Jim Morrison (2005 WQT champ), Richard Beckwith (2007 WQT runner-up), Anthony Bishop, Charles Freeman, and Wilma Wolverton. Other interested women and youth (up to four in each category) are still welcome to participate and should contact an ACF Exec member soon for details. Participants will need to cover their own expenses, but prize money for the top places will be offered.

Most of us recall the devastating fire that engulfed the International Checker Hall of Fame in Petal, Mississippi. The ICHF continues to promote checkers despite great obstacles. An ICHF annual for 2008 is in the works. Charles Walker sent me the following update on the building repairs.

"I will do a page on the ICHF progress in regards to repairs and remolding thus far as to the fire damage. It appears we will be able to start having Checker Events after July of this year. So let us know about the events that will be coming up next year and the ICHF will place its bids. Such bids will include room and meals. Just so you will know...

We are converting the 4,000 sq ft of office space into sleeping rooms on the ground floor in Hall 11 which is currently under remodeling. The second floor {Kings Hall} will be used for the playing of Checker Events.

Also Deloris is converting the swimming pool into a game room which we hope to be ready sometime next year. The large restaurant kitchen and playing room [Kings Hall] will also be available to feed our invited checker guests."
