The Traveler’s Choice Hotel is located on I-71 between Columbus and Cleveland (closer to Cleveland) and is less than a two hours drive from our 2005 Dublin venue. The hotel is located on the northeast corner of the Exit 218 interchange with state highway 18. Go east ¼-mile, and the hotel is on the left. (Need to do some type of a U-turn at the light to get around the median.)

The Traveler’s Choice has many guestrooms. They will also offer a daily complimentary breakfast, which they don’t normally do for their other patrons. The rate on the sleeping rooms will be $33.00 plus tax. Phone number = 330-725-4571 or e-mail Bw36067@aol.com with type of room, dates, etc. The hotel contains a bar and outdoor swimming pool.

Nearby Attractions

Many restaurants are located at this interchange, including within walking distance --Dairy Queen, Cracker Barrel, Bob Evans, Waffle House, Buffalo Wild Wings, Alexander’s (a great find!), Lou’s Landing Grill and more. A large antique mall is nearby. The Lodi outlet mall and Strongsville mall are both 15 minutes away by interstate.

Cleveland has many attractions, including Lake Erie, Jacob’s Field, Tower City, Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland Zoo, Great Lakes Science Center, Playhouse Square, Geauga Lake Amusement Park, and the John G. White chess & checker collection at the Cleveland Public Library.

Airport Transportation to Medina

Airport Direct Transportation (440) 479-1515
$55 (with tax) per trip from Cleveland Hopkins airport to Medina. $65 from Akron-Canton airport to Medina.

Ace Taxi (216) 361-4700
$54 from Cleveland Hopkins airport to Medina, or $95 roundtrip.

I also contacted Hopkins Shuttle service (in airport terminal). Medina is not on their regular route, and cost is $80 (1-6 people) one-way.

Unfortunately, the airport situation is not ideal for those who wish to fly, since Medina is in another county. I may be able to assist with rides for a few travelers who arrive on the weekend. (contact me at beckwith24@msn.com or 34490 Ridge Road #115, Willoughby, OH 44094 and we can discuss).

Donations are most welcome and may be sent to Alan Millhone or R. Beckwith. A copy of the select games will be given to contributors of at least $10 (or $15 will get you the youth tournament games too.) Paypal donations can be made under ACF Store under Donations/ACF Tournament Fund Donation.

2007 ACF “Derek Oldbury” Go-As-You-Please (GAYP) National Tournament
The 2007 ACF “Derek Oldbury” Go-As-You-Please (GAYP) National Tournament was held July 22nd - 27th , 2007 in Plaza Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada . There are two parts to the hotel cost. Players will pay a sleeping room rate of only $29 plus tax for Sunday night through Thursday night and $65 on Friday when prices go way up in all of Vegas. Each entrant will also pay a one-time $60 charge to an ACF representative to help pay for our playing room for five days. (The playing room costs $500 per day!) Two persons to a room are allowed at the $29 plus tax rate. Family & friends of checkers will pay only $29 plus tax from Sunday through Thursday and $65 plus tax on Friday & Saturday. $15 extra is charged for each person beyond two to a room. Please note that the Plaza hotel does not accept Saturday arrivals on the 21st, but visitors wanting to arrive early at the Plaza may come Friday the 20th with weekend room rates of $65 plus tax. Even at ~$41 total per weeknight for entrants, this is a deal that is hard to beat anywhere, and we thank the sales staff at the Plaza for their cooperation. Hotel shuttles (for a fee) are available outside the airport baggage area.

We highly recommend that reservations be made as early as possible since rooms are limited at that price. Make sure that you mention that you'll be there for the US Checkers Championship to get the special rate. Let's make this one of the biggest tournaments ever in order to show the Las Vegas hotels that it's worth it to have checker tournaments there! The number for reservations is 1-800-634-6575. A deposit of $33 will hold your room. A major credit card will be required to hold the reservation, or you can send a check in early enough to hold your reservation. You may cancel your reservation and get your deposit back if you notify the hotel in advance.

The Plaza is a great hotel in a great location. It has a swimming pool, tennis courts, and plenty of restaurants that cater to all tastes. Food is very reasonable also. Any questions, call Gerry Lopez at (951) 695-2499 or email prof237@netzero.net.

Entry fees will be $50 (Master’s) / $30 (Majors) / $20 (Minors). Prize distribution is expected to be similar to that of 2005 National GAYP. ACF Membership is required to enter all divisions, and may be paid at registration. Registration will take place Monday morning from 8:30-10:30 followed by a business meeting. Format will be 13 two-game rounds (2 rounds Monday, 3 rounds Tuesday through Thursday, two rounds Friday) scored by game. Three points are awarded for a bye and for a forfeited round.

  "Gene Lindsay" 3-move US National
The "Gene Lindsay" 3-move US National was held July 21st - 25th , 2008 in Vegas Club, downtown Las Vegas . The 2008 “Gene Lindsay” ACF National 3-move Tournament (Part of the 2008 IAGO World Tour) will be held in Las Vegas July 21 through 25 (Masters also finish on 25th). This will be a three-move restriction event using 156-opening deck and Swiss system. Recording of games and time clocks will be used in the Master’s group. Clocks and scoresheets will be provided. In order to finish on Friday, the Masters will play 6 games a day, Monday through Friday. This equates to one two-game round, scored by round, and seven four-game rounds, also scored by round. Masters will use a tough deck consisting of 80 openings for the final two games if the round is tied. The Majors and Minors will play 8 four-game rounds, scoring by game (2 points for each win, 1 point for each draw), with one round Monday & Friday, and 2 rounds Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Entry fees will be $50 (Master’s) / $30 (Majors) / $20 (Minors). ACF Membership is required to enter all divisions, and may be paid at registration. Players should also note the additional $75 to be collected at registration as part of hotel costs, as explained below under room rates.

Our National Tournament honoree this year is Gene Lindsay. He was a past ACF Treasurer and frequent International Match Player, who placed 4th at the 2007 GAYP National. He recently left a large endowment to several checker organizations, and was a friend to many.
The "Arthur Niederhoffer" National Youth Tournament (for 21 and under) will take place July 19 & 20.

"The VEGAS CLUB in downtown Las Vegas (across the street from the Plaza) will be the venue for this years 3 move National from July 21 thru 25. Rates have gone up in Las Vegas this year but we were able to get a special room rate of only $48 total for players at the Vegas Club. Also Friday and Saturday rates for July 18, 19 and for July 25, 26 will be only $55. Thats a great deal! Two players can share a room and cut the already low room rate by half. We have booked 40 rooms so players should get in their reservations before June 15th to make sure they take advantage of the special $48 rate. To make your reservation, call the central reservation #1-800-634-6575 and tell them you want to place your reservation at the VEGAS CLUB (not the Plaza) and make sure to mention the American Checker Federation special rate. We expect this event to attract the best players in the world. There will be three divisions as usual: Masters, Majors, Minors.

Clarification for those reserving rooms for the July National Tournament in Las Vegas….
The previously advertised room rates were $55 (Fri-Sat) and $48 (Sun.-Thurs.). The real room rates are $55 (plus tax, Fri & Sat.) and $29 (plus tax, Sun.-Thurs.). The “$48” was provided for budgeting purposes to assist with the playing room costs (as was done last year). These are still excellent rates for a strip hotel. There is a $15 per weekday differential for players. So, players will need to provide an additional $75 per player at registration, as the hotel will not collect this for us. Any non-playing guests with separate rooms will only have to pay $29 plus tax for weekdays.

Gerry Lopez has bargained good rates for us, and he was the only one who offered a National bid. Gerry tells me this will be his last Las Vegas bid, so please consider supporting what will probably conclude the “Las Vegas era” in checkers.

Regarding the call-in number 1-800-634-6575, note that the Plaza Hotel handles the room reservations for the Vegas Club, which does not have their own reservations line (same owner for both hotels).

Players may send pledges for the National to Gerry Lopez or to ACF Store / Donations/ ACF Tournament Fund Donation OR /ACF National Youth Tournament at www.usacheckers.com. Pledges have been submitted by the following: 1. Wilma Wolverton 2. George Stallsworth 3. Alan Millhone 4. Solomon Reece 5. Forest reece 6. Bob Murr 7. Richard Fortman 8. Gerry Lopez 9. Paul Stein 10. Nico Pradernas 11. John Webster 12. Nery Cardenas 13. Sol Fenster 14. John Gibson 15. Al Darrow 16. Bob Finchum 17. Ken Shultz 18. Rich Beckwith 19. Ken Christian 20. California Checker Association 21. Howard Gain 22. Paul Morris 23. Jim Loy 24. Frank Jacobo 25. Sal Cicero 26. Louis V. Cowie 27. JR Smith 28. Todd Stewart 29. Mac Banks.

You can send your check or pledge to Gerry Lopez, ACF Representative for Nationals at 41858 Corte Selva, Temecula, Ca. 92591 or phone Gerry at: (951) 695-2499 or email Gerry: prof237@netzero.net. All pledges of $10 or more will receive a free copy of the 50 unannotated selected games of the Masters division.

For the first time ever the National will be followed by the 9th. District Open (the Western States Championship) which will take place on Sunday, July 27 and Monday July 28 and perhaps July 29 if a playoff is needed for the championship. All three events will take place at the Vegas Club. Lets all try to make this one of the biggest Nationals ever to show people that checkers is a thriving game. Players have asked about the price of food in Las Vegas. Las Vegas, one of the top tourist attractions in the world, is without a doubt the least expensive attraction in the world when it comes to food. In downtown Las Vegas you can eat a buffet luncheon fit for a king for $8. For those on a tight budget there are plenty of fast food restaurants in the area. Food is inexpensive because the hotels want to attract players to their gambling tables so we can thank the gamblers for the lowest food prices in the world at a great tourist attraction, Bon appetit!” -----Gerry Lopez

  Illinois 101 Checker Tournament
The Illinois 101 Checker Tournament was held October 2nd - 3rd , 2010 in Illinois Centre mall, Marion, Illinois . This tournament has an interesting story behind it and how it was started. In the early 1900’s the checker players in Chicago dominated the Illinois tournaments. The down state players arranged a tournament that would exclude the players from Cook County. There are 101 counties in Illinois, hence the Illinois “101” Tournament was born. Then in 1973 the tournament became “open” so all players could participate. There used to be several hundred checker players in Illinois, but now most of them are gone.

This year tournament will be divided into three classes, expert, major and minor for the beginner checker players. Registration will began on Saturday at 8:00 a.m., the business meeting at 9:00 a.m., with play to start at 9:45 a.m. We will play four rounds Saturday and three rounds on Sunday.

The public is welcome to attend. Come on out, bring the family, and watch the “Checker Players” demonstrate the beauty and depth of this (SIMPLE) game. Young and old, beginners and experts can find hours of enjoyment playing checkers.

  District 1 (Mass.)
The District 1 (Mass.) was held June 11th , 2011 in Dover, MA . Tournament will be held at Richard Whites place, 8 Pine St, Dover MA. Registration 8:30, first round 9:00 - play continues until all games are complete, generally by 6PM. (You can show up a bit late but within reason please). There are hotels nearby (Needham, Natick, Dedham, etc). Well provide a light lunch. No entry fee, no prize money, but you get your name on a plaque. Sometimes the press shows up.

Tournament will be go-as-you-please, round-robin with each round consisting of 1 game, draw for colors. We deal with time control in this way. Weve never used clocks because most players don own them and aren familiar with them. First round pairings are assigned by arrival time and after that, players match up as their games complete. So, if you are a slow player, fast player, or half-fast player (I think thats a Wiswell-ism), youll have an opponent without having to wait for a round to complete. The last few years have worked out well under this system. There are generally 2 or 3 players who end up playing the last games after everyone else has finished and those games have been the decisive ones. Its unorthodox but it gets us through in one day in a reasonable amount of time.

Gene, Gary, and John Grisley will be sorely missed, and their absence will create a void in Illinois Checkers that will be hard to fill, a sad day for checkers indeed.

  District 9 (Las Vegas)
The District 9 (Las Vegas) was held October 9th - 11th , 2011 in Travelsuites Inn, Las Vegas . The 9th District has planned its 3-Move tourney for Las Vegas this year on October 9,10,11 (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday) at Travelsuites Inn on the fabulous Las Vegas Strip. The hotel is right next door to the world famous Circus Circus, on the same side of the street as Circus Circus. It takes five seconds to cross the street from Travelsuites to Circus Circus. The hotel is giving us a special rate of $35 a day for two persons in a room. The tax is included in the $35 so that’s hard to beat. Just mention the checker tourney to get that rate. We’d like to get a good turnout so that the hotel will be happy to have us every year. The Circus has almost twelve hours of free performances by some of the best in the world, from 11AM thru midnight by some of the best trapeze performers, acrobats, specialty acts, etc. The Circus is a great place for families with kids. It has all kinds of rides, at least 25 different activities such as bumper cars, water chutes, rollercoasters, clown shows, etc. for a charge. Travelsuites is on the strip and is therefore close to many great hotels. Travelsuites has a nice pool to refresh during the day, its a very refreshing way to beat the heat. Please spread the word. This is our second tourney on the strip so we want it to have enough players and friends to have the hotel welcome us back next year. The other hotels wanted $1,500 -$3,000 for the playing room. Travelsuites is not charging us anything. Anyone, even people not interested in checkers (our family, friends, or acquaintances) can take advantage of this special by just mentioning the checkers. Western states tourney in Las Vegas! Travelsuites Inn, 2830 Las Vegas Boulevard South, Las Vegas, NV 89109-1102, (702) 735-4222.

District 9 contains States: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, & Wyoming.

New England Open & District 1
The New England Open & District 1 was held June 23rd , 2012 in Home of Richard White, 8 Pine Street, Dover, Massachusetts 02030-2423 . The New England States Open & District 1 Championship will be held at the home of Richard White, 8 Pine Street, Dover, Massachusetts 02030-2423, Saturday, June 23, 2012.

Register 8:30 a.m. 1st round play starts at 9:30 a.m. - Over by generally 6 p.m. depending on the number of players, I'd like to use the same round-robin format we used last year: Games to be played as soon as the players are ready to begin, go-as-you-please, round-robin with each round consisting of 1 game, draw for colors. (self-pairing after 1st round). We deal with time control in this way. We've never used clocks because most players don't own them and aren't familiar with them. First round pairings are assigned by arrival time and after that, players match up as their games complete. So, if you're a slow player, fast player, or half-fast player (I think that's a Wiswell-ism), you'll have an opponent without having to wait for a round to complete. The last few years have worked out well under this system. There are generally 2 or 3 players who end up playing the last games after everyone else has finished and those games have been the decisive ones. It's unorthodox but it gets us through in one day in a reasonable amount of time. Highest finishing N.E. resident will be the District One Champion; the highest finishing player from each N.E. state will be the Champion of that State. We'll provide lunch, coffee and snacks. No entry fee, no prize money, but you get your name on a plaque (contribution appreciated). Sometimes the press shows up. There are hotels nearby (Needham, Natick, Dedham, etc). For more details, questions, or directions, please email Richard White whitefork@comcast.net Phone 508-785-3197
