Some antique boards

Postby whitefork on Fri Jan 05, 2007 12:59 pm

The roundsquare board was great-grandfather's. Checkers on the front, backgammon on the back.
The victorian was from mother's side of the family. Glass covering bits of mother-of-pearl and some kind of gold glitter.

Whitefork,
I bumped your thread up, thought maybe we could try to pump some life into it......seems like a good idea for a thread. How about it....anyone have any images of an antique, rare, special , unusual or signed board they have and wanna show off and share with the rest of us......??
I'll get some photos of my own boards and post them soon.
BTW, Whitefork, excellent post....that one from your mother's side .....    !!!

Parker Brothers made this board and Checkers about 70 (or more) years ago.
Notice the numbers are on the white squares so turn the board sideways to set up and study diagrams that are printed in books and newspapers.

The late Elzy Langdon, 9 times Kentucky state champion since 1948, used to make the most sought after checker board. He made the boards from inlaid tile. Pictured is an Elzy Langdon checkerboard that I bought from Lloyd Castello at the Florida open in the mid 1980s. It is my very favorite checkerboard.

Bob,
WOW.....NIIIICE !!!!
I had read that Mr. Langdon made boards, and, I had seen photos of these foldable ( those are hinges, correct ?) inlaid boards, but I did not know that these were the ones made by Mr. Langdon.... .
He probably made Tinsley's personalized, monogrammed board that I have seen him pictured with...(?)
Excellent post !!!!
Thanx for sharing..!!!

Yes, this is a hinged board. He also made non-folding boards.
