2017 - THE YEAR IN REVIEW

Postby Bill Salot on Thu Jan 11, 2018 9:05 pm

The 6 contests in 2017 were won by 6 different composers: Roy Little, Wilma Wolverton, Ed Atkinson, Jim Loy, Leo Springer (Netherlands), and Bill Salot, in that order. Roy Little came in 2nd (or tied for 2nd) 3 times. This broke the tie and made him PROBLEMIST OF THE YEAR for the 4th consecutive year.

Only Roy Little, Ed Atkinson and Bill Salot competed in all 6 contests; Jim Loy competed 4 times. With only one entry each, Wilma and Leo won, while Brian Hinkle, John Webster and Liam Stephens (Ireland) tied for 2nd in their respective contests.

The late George H. Slocum's "lost" problems, from more than 100 years ago, failed to win in 4 tries (runner-up once) before being disqualified due to prior publication. The "lost" problems were not comparable to the popular problems that made Slocum famous.

The list of composers who have competed is still small, but international. The club is NOT exclusive. We want it to grow. Please join us and participate at the link below.

The ever-changing contest themes are governed by the problems entered. In 2017, themes spanned Escapes, Delicate Victories, Breeches, Zugzwang, Double Jeopardy, and Deferred Quadruples.

Contest 33 launched a "ladder" to identify our best problem evaluators, based on votes they made public before the contest polls closed. The standings at the end of 2017 follow:

1. Liam Stephens (Ireland) - 4 winners picked in 4 tries
2-3. Richard Marlowe & Wilma Wolverton - 2 out of 2
4-7. Sergio Scarpetta (Italy), Mike Ross, Kathy Wirthwein, Slava Gorin (Russia) - 1 out of 1
8-9. George Hay, Gene Ellison - 2 out of 3
10. Jim Somers (Ireland) - 1 out of 2
11-12. Rich Beckwith, Michele Borghetti (Italy) - 0 out of 1
13. Brian Hinkle - 0 out of 2

We continue to generate contest statistics over time. There were jumps in problems and visitors during 2017:

Year...Problems/Contest...Votes/Contest... Visitors/Contest
2012.............3.6.................19.9..................no data
2013.............4.8.................17.7..................no data
2014.............4.7.................17.8...................304.7
2015.............4.2.................15.8...................322.6
2016.............4.3.................17.3...................313.7
2017.............5.2.................16.2...................373.0

The first contest of 2018 starts right here on January 20.
