Actually, I did not sign the game off as drawn - although it is undoubtedly sound for White - I simply indicated that it was 'a crossboard artist's dream'. (Complete Checkers P400) I think the games quoted by Jim, and the evidence of the current match, support this. Also, with Black (I wasn't recommending it with White), I don't believe there is merit in memorising play here: there are millions of occasions in the game where you simply have to be prepared to play it as you see it.

Scarpetta missing a chance!
-----------------------------------

The fourth day of the World Championship Match in Checkers finally ended in four more draws, but all the games were not boring at all or without fight. Actually, in game 14, World Champion Michele Borghetti, trying hard to stir things up, gave a chance to score to Sergio Scarpetta, but like Miki missed his chance yesterday today Sergio missed the winnning move and allowed the Champion to escape.

After the tragic events in Livorno and four tough days, both players now finally deserve a rest day on Friday.

The live stream will be back on Saturday at 9:00 CEST

Score after four days (16 games)

Postby Alex_Moiseyev on Thu Sep 14, 2017 9:30 pm

For me personally it is always interesting to see "turning points" in game when logical, scientific result change - someone miss a win or draw. I already posted here diagram where Sergio missed a win and here is a diagram where Miki missed a draw

S. Scarpetta vs A. M. Borghetti
3-moves WCM 2017, G14

1. 9-13 23-18 2. 12-16 27-23 (A) 3. 16-20 32-27 4. 10-15 18-14 5. 15-18 22x15 6. 11x18 26-22 7. 7-11 22x15 8. 11x18 25-22 9. 18x25 29x22 10. 6-9 23-18 11. 8-11 24-19 12. 4-8 31-26 (B) 13. 8-12 19-15 14. 11-16 (C) 15-10 15. 16-19 21-17 16. 3-8 (D) 10-6 17. 1x10 14x7 18. 2x11 26-23 19. 19x26 30x23 20. 11-16 28-24 21. 8-11 24-19 22. 11-15 18x11 23. 9-14 17x10 24. 5-9 11-7 25. 9-14 7-3 26. 14-17 22-18 27. 17-22 3-7 28. 22-26 7-11 29. 26-31 27-24 30. 20x27 11x20 31. 27-32 19-15 32. 32-27 10-6 33. 13-17 23-19 34. 27-24 20x27 35. 31x24 6-2 36. 17-22 2-7 37. 22-26 7-11 38. 26-31 18-14 39. 31-27 14-10 40. 24-20 10-6 Draw

#1. White to move and draw ........ #2. Red to move and win
Image ... Image
15-11* draw, 15-10? loses .......... 12-16* win, 3-8 draw

A. Interesting and fresh attempt. Something prepared ?

B. Actually all white problems started here. In my eyes 30-25 is much better than 31-26 and gives white even or even slightly better game.

C. See diagram #1. This is where Miki made a losing move 15-10? Continue from diagram #1: 15-11, 16-19, 14-10, 9-14, 18x9, 5x14, 26-23, 19x26, 30x23, 2-6, 10-7, 3x10, 22-18, 6-9, 11-7 (or 11-8), draw

D. See diagram #2. And this is again where red missed a win. 12-16* instead 3-8 won the game. Continue: 12-16, 26-23, 19x26, 30x23, 2-6, 10-7, 3x10, 14x7, 6-10, 28-24, 9-14, 18x9, 5x21, 24-19, 21-25, 19x12, 25-30, 7-2, 10-14, 22-18, 1-5, 18x9, 5x14, 2-6, 30-26, 6-9, 26x19, 9x18, 19-23 Red Wins

G14: ... 27-23!? (Favoured by the late Bill Edwards); 16-20! 32-27; 10-15 was given by me in Solid Checkers, but not mentioned in CC for some reason.

Concerning game 14, I only have these two games in my database (nothing on 16-20).

Ingram, E. - Ross, R., US National , 1972
1.09-13 23-18 2.12-16 27-23 3.16-19 24x15 4.10x19 23x16 5.11x20 21-17 6.08-11 25-21 7.04-08 17-14 8.08-12 32-27 9.06-09 29-25 10.01-06 26-23 11.06-10 30-26 12.10x17 21x14 13.02-06 18-15 14.11x18 22x15 15.09x18 23x14 16.07-10 14x07 17.03x19 25-22 18.05-09 22-18 19.12-16 18-15 20.09-14 15-11 21.14-17 11-07 22.17-22 26x17 23.13x22 07-02 24.06-09 02-06 25.09-14 27-24 26.20x27 31x15 draw

I don't have the ACF Bulletin handy, with the above game, so I don't know what the annotations say.

A hard fight in the morning.
------------------------------------

The morning session of the 5th day saw both players in fighting spirit. Especially the first game was tough, and Sergio Scrpetta escaped to a narrow draw in a very critical ending after he excahnged into what seemed to be a comfortable position. But , in making a brilliant positional sacrifice of a piece, Michele Borghetti not only regained the sacrificed man, but also reach en ending that promised nothing but hard toil to reach avery narrow draw for the challenger... . However, he did not falter and played a perfect defense, forcing a draw after almsot four hours.

In the second game, Miki tried a very rare deviation from the famous Souter opening, but it seems Sergio knew this line and how to keep it balanced. Another draw was agreed after some complications. The drawing streak is now 12 games.

Score after 18 games:
----------------------------
GM Scarpetta 3
GM Borghetti 0
Drawn 15
22 games to go!

Scarpetta expands lead to 4-0 at half time
----------------------------------------------------

In a match of 40 games, the moment when the match reaches game 20, can be termed as "half time".
Sergio Scarpetta took the chance to prove his determination to win the World Championship title by beating current World Champion Michele Borghetti with the stronger side of the not so easy opening 1. 9-13 24-19 2. 5-9. He then showed perfect defense to draw the weak side of that opening, thus confirming his lead by 4 games.

When we look at the chances both players got, we see that Borghetti was in a loss in five games, while Scarpetta only went into a loss once, following an old, but faulty analysis of the great Marian Tinsely.

So far, Sergio Scarpetta was both much more efficient in taking his chances and more successful in creating chances. His lead, there can be no doubt, is very well deserved.

Michele Borghetti may be affected by the tragedy that hit his home town, and he certainly could have avoided a loss of both sides of the same opening in games 5 and 6, but even with bis best play he would still face an opponent that made no mistake so far, except one that even the great Tinsley fell for, in fact he only fell into it, because the great Tinsley also fell for it.

The match is not over yet, but if Sergio Scarpetta manages to keep his level, only walking into one loss in 20 games, we could see a new World Champion crowned this year.

Score after 5 days (20 games):
------------------------------------
GM Sergio Scarpetta (ITA) 4 wins,
GM Michele Borghetti (ITA) 0 wins,
16 games drawn,
20 games to go!

Sergio's performance has been "godlike" thus far. Not sure any human has played at this high of a level since the great Tinsley. Miki is in serious trouble.

Not exactly godlike, as Sergio seems to have been in one loss and missed one win. But he is doing very well. That is good to see.

Both players are doing exceptionally well in this match to the best of their abilities ... today. What happen tomorrow ... who knows ? I would be extremely cautious to use the word "God" affective to any human.

In the past we had fighting tandem Tinsley vs Hellman, Chinook vs Tinsley, Moiseyev vs King. Now we have fighting tandem Borghetti vs Scarpetta. History never happen the same way twice and any analogy doesn't make much sense.

If Sergio wins this match, we don't have new God, we'll have just a new very good World Champion for another couple years.

Also I really hope if Miki lose this match, his decision to quit checkers will be postpone :D

Life is continue and checkers are alive and doing well !
