The last game of the first day ended in a draw, after Sergio Scarpetta first equalized comfortably, but then seemed to be in a hopeless position after he played inaccurately. However, a surprising defensive shot at the end cleared the smoke and he came away unhurt.

Score after Day One:

Perhaps everyone noticed about bad 3-7?? However number of missing moves in this game was more than just 1.

Here is critical position before red move 11. 8-12?

#1. Red to move and draw.
Image

Miki played 8-12? here (5-9 or 2-6 is OK) and I claim this as losing move. Here is winning path for white after 8-12: 24-20*, 5-9, 17-13, 2-6, 27-23, 9-14, 28-24, 3-7, 24-19**, 15x24, 22-18, 14-17, 18-14, 10-15, 14-9, 6-10, 9-6 and we reach this position on diagram #2 which I clam as white man down win.

#2. Red to move, white wins
Image

Going back to position on diagram #1. After 8-12? Sergio didn't play winning 24-20? but instead 30-25, 16-20 (correct), 25-21. And we reached position on diagram #3 where Miki made a last error and played losing 3-7? Instead, 5-9 (again!) 11-16, or 12-16 should be OK. After 3-7? Sergio played it right to the end of game and scored very important win in the first day of match.

#3. Red to move and draw.
Image

Here is another way to play for red from diagram #3 which is still losing:

3-7?, 17-13, 10-14 (vary from game), 13-9*, 7-10, 24-19*. 15x24, 28x19, 11-16, 27-23, 20-24, 21-17*, 14x21, 32-27, 5x14, 27x11, White Wins

A) Temporarily pitch 13-9 at move #5 is weak and shall be avoided. If pitch played, red should return man 19-23 with better position as played in the game. See diagram #1 after temporarily pitch and 8-11.

B) On diagram #1 after 8-11 white should immediately trade 19-15 which keeps them out of most troubles. 31-26 as played in the game is seriously weakening first row and allow red to trap white pieces in center.

C) This trade 19-15 was still available at moves #9 and #10.

D) See diagram #2 before 10. 27-23? which is losing move for white. 19-15 here was last chance in the game when red can secure a draw by 19-15*.

E) After 27-23 red had three scientific wins: 14-17 (as played in the game), 6-10 and 8-12.

The 11th game of the World Championship Match was a Ryan's Cross (1.11-15 23-18, 2.12-16), an opening regarded as very bad for the first player. However, World Champion Michele Borghetti showed that he knows how to draw it with ease. Now he has a chance to pressurize his opponent with it in game 12 by playing the stronger side.

I certainly disagree with this statement. It is uneven opening indeed, but not as critical as some other.

Borghetti missing opportunity!
---------------------------------------

As was expected after game 11, World Champion Michele Borghetti took the initiative in game 12. And challenger Sergio Scarpetta trusted an old recommendation from a standard opening book that is however, refuted.
Scarpetta, not knowing about the improvement on published play, had no choice but to go into a database loss that had already been shown by George Miller in a 2001 correspondence game against Al Lyman.

After he found the winning moves, Michele however faltered in converting his advantage when he played 18. ... 23-19 ?! instead of the winning 18. ...28-24.

Sergio Scarpetta thus maintains his lead by three games. Will this missed golden opportunity affect the play of the champion ? Is challenger Scarpetta not as versed in published play as it seemed?

Stay tuned!

Games 13 and 14 will be played tomorrow morning at 9:00 CEST.
Games 15 ad 16 will be played tomorrow afternoon at 15:30 CEST.

This error was first published in "Basic Checkers" volume 5, Pg. 47 - analyses from M. Tinsley and D. Lafferty. Later it was published in Solid Checkers, Part 5, Pg. 41, Variation 7. I also think Don Lafferty was in this loss later but his opponent missed this chance.

Here is position where red made a losing move:

Red to move and draw

1-6* draw, 10-15? loses

And here is where Miki missed a win:

White to move and win

28-24*

Continue from diagram:

18. .... 28-24 19. 1-6 17-14 20. 6-9 14-10 21. 9-14 10-7 22. 8-12 7-2 23. 5-9 2-7 24. 9-13 7-11 25. 14-17 11x18 26. 17x26 24-20 27. 26-31 23-19 White Wins

I am wondering if Miki was aware of this correction "Basic Checkers" or he corrected M. Tinsley and D. Lafferty across the board ? Unfortunately correction was incomplete

I was saying, that game was a "must win" for Miki if he were to have a shot to come back. Now, his spirit may be crushed after missing a win, which he arguably should have been able to figure out. The trade obviously let Sergio off the hook, so I am not quite sure what happened. 28-24 obviously kept the pressure on even if the win couldn't be seen yet. Now we will see where it goes from here. The question is, does Miki have the warrior spirit to make a grand comeback?!
