Hello everyone,

As you may already know, the 3-move WTM will be held in Livorno, Michele’s hometown, from 9 to 23 September 2017.

The match has been organised and sponsored by the FID, the ASD Dama Foggia (a draughts club in which Michele and I are members, whose president is Alessandro Solazzo), Michele and his father Gianfranco, the local authority of Livorno, the ASD Dama Livorno, especially the president of the club, Antonio Tassone, and a few other members of it: Matteo Bernini, Andrea Candosi, and Paolo Blandina.

The Borghetti family has been promoting the match in Livorno for several months and they have found a few sponsors. They are doing a great job.

The venue of the match is La Vedetta, a three-star hotel that lies in Montenero, a very famous neighbourhood of Livorno thanks to its sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of Grace. The venue is the same as the previous 3-move WTM, Borghetti vs Kondlo.
The hotel has a large conference room. It is suitable to host guests that pay a visit to us during the match. Guests will also be able to watch the match in the lobby on LCD wide TV.

The official referee of the match is Alan Millhone.

The opening ceremony will be held in the town hall of Livorno on Saturday, September 9, at 5 pm. During the ceremony, in front of the referee, the two contenders shall toss for colour.

Four games a day, except on rest days, will be played from 10 to 22 September, two games in the morning and the other two in the afternoon. The play starts at 9 am, and resumes after lunch break at 3 pm.

The rest days are 12, 15 and 19 September.

The entire match is broadcast live on the website www.micheleborghetti.it

The closing ceremony starts on Saturday, September 23, at 10 am in the conference room.

The gold and silver medals will be given to the winner and his opponent respectively, by Benito Vaglini’s family in memory of him. Benito was the first Michele's draught teacher.

Many thanks to Joe MacDaniel for having donated $ 1,000. Many thanks also to Richard Beckwith for having donated $ 105 and George Hay for having donated $ 25.

The pamphlet of the match, which was printed a couple of weeks ago, has a short introduction of the contenders in it.

I am not aware of the information since I'm not taking care of the organization of the match. All I know is the event expenses are high, more than € 4,000.

Anyway, I’ll let you know a couple of days before the match starts.

As it is usual for events like this, the prize fund will be divided 60/40 between the winner and runner-up of the match. In case of a tied match, it will be divided 50/50.

Here's the latest news.
So far the prize money which has been collected by the organizers of the match from sponsors is € 4,000.
This amount of money excludes donations from checker players and supporters.

My prediction: there will be a lot of draws in this match and winner will not collect more then 3 wins.

Sergio exhibition to USA this summer proved that his form is far from perfect, but in other hands Miki last announcement also proved that he has some problems with motivation. It will be very interesting match.

A storm with heavy rain falls hit Livorno last night and forced a postponement of the World Championship Match 2017 in Checkers (3-move) between Michele Borghetti and Sergio Scarpetta for at least until 15:30 CEST today.

We hope both players, the referee, all organizers and checker friends are save and all right.

The Start of the World Championship Match in Checkers (3-move) between World Champion GM Michele Borghetti (ITA) and Challenger GM Sergio Scarpetta (ITA) has finally been postponed for one day.

Here is the official statement by the organizers:

"The serious situation in which Livorno is now, the serious damage to the town has so far been ascertained, the discomfort that all people from Livorno feel, and the losses which have so far confirmed, oblige us to prolong the break for all day. So the match will start tomorrow morning at 9:00. We all express our sympathy for people that are suffering and our deepest condolences to the families have lost their loved ones in this terrible tragedy."

After a storm with heavy rain most parts of Livorno are flooded.
At least five persons lost their lives, and supply lines are cut, leaving parts of Livorno without electricity and water.
The Mayor of Livorno has called the day officially a day of mourning.
