Keen draughts nationals
By Hallam Hope
The jockeying in the Barbados Draughts Association’s national tournament intensified Tuesday as Carson Farley claimed the lead in the Masters division while Carl David, Claytis Pinder and Hascol Trotman emerged joint leaders in the Majors category.
Waldron defeated Jeffrey “Socks” Clarke 2-0, Farley trounced Colin Price 2-0 and Clarke held Jack Francis to two draws at the Barbados Bridge League on Belleville Tuesday. Farley now has 17 points, Waldron 16 and Clarke 15.
In the Majors class Pinder defeated Andrew “Lion” Harris 1-0, David had two draws and Trotman also drew against Gabriel Crichlow and Harris as the trio of leaders finished the fourth round of matches on 15 points apiece. Colin Price has been the only gentleman to claim wins under a new controversial time rule, on this occasion gaining points from the previously unbeaten Kent Layne.
Several players have opted not to claim wins from their opponents on time, having accepted that 30 moves in 20 minutes is not conducive to quality play.
Danny Gill, the come back kid, managed to defeat Wynell Neverson, the lone female, 1-0. Stephen King who suffered two three-strokes at the hands of Neverson Monday recovered from hospitalisation to defeat Trevor Yearwood 1-0. Oliver Springer also won 1-0 from Michael Sargeant.
The Majors is so competitive that Harris and Matthew Barnett are on 14 points while Crichlow, Everton Wiggins, Gill and Andrew “Yammi” Hunte are on 13.
In the Master’s league Cedric Fields, Richard Grazette and Francis all have 14 points while Price is on 13.
Eight players advance to the next round from both categories.

what do you guys have to say about this 30 moves in 20 mins thats how i had my first lost in the masters

Kent, I was surprised that it was up to your opponent to claim the win on time. I would have thought that winning on time would be automatic. In general 40 seconds per move for the first twenty moves seems fast for "regular" time. I am more comfortable with a time block for the entire game, with or without Fischer Clocks. I have watched what I can of WCM's in chess and checkers and World 10x10 Championships of various kinds. The FMJD seems ahead of the WCDF and FIDE in that they (FMJD) use a block time of 120 minutes per game plus a 1 minute per move time increment. I like how the Italian Checkers Open was conducted with 40 minutes per game plus 10 seconds per move increment. It seems simpler to me to time the entire game instead of some number of moves.

Congratulations to Richard Grazette - new Barbados Champion 2015 !

I am very sure - this is not a final word from Jack and he will be back to business soon. Just aging problems (shaking): some events go up, some - down

Also many thanks to Kent Layne - our permanent Barbados checkers correspondent and ambassador who keeps us updated.
