Barbados Draughts Association Double Knockout

Postby champion374 on Sun Mar 01, 2015 7:58 pm

The Barbados Draughts Association Double Knockout Tournament is in progress, and after two rounds none of the players were knocked out from the pool of twelve but, a number of players were left hanging by a mere web.
The upset of the night saw Junior Waldron losing his first game to Levi Thompson who was a virtual unknown player at the start of the tournament. Waldron was however able to stage a comeback drawing 1-1. Yet another upset saw Richard Grazette going down 1-0 to the meanest of Lodge Road Hascal Trotman.
Five players, Levi Thompson, Richard Grazette, Iran Callender, Clatis Pinder, and Mark Barnett have 1/2 of a life left. This means that another draw or loss match will see them knocked out.
National 3 move restriction winner Michael Barker as well as Hascal Trotman, and Michael Weekes still hold firm with a full life remaining.
At the end of round two Junior Waldron, Julian Burgess, and Dennis Douglin, found themselves in much stronger positions with 1.5 lives heading into round three. The only player left standing with all of his lives in tack is Colin Price, who triumphed over Michael Baker 1-0 and Ian Callender in rounds one and two respectively

Michael Barker takes Double Knockout

3/11/2015

By Hallam Hope

Michael Barker is the one to beat in local draughts circles, if you are going by current official ratings.

Barker produced a clinical finish on first position which any student of the game would do well to re-play with a 2-1 defeat of Junior “Post” Waldron in the final of the Double Knockout draughts competition at Bush Hall Sunday evening.

Despite clawing back to draw 1-1 in a see-saw, keenly-contested final, the postman failed to deliver the mail in the fast-paced ten-minute maximum final game where Barker’s experience from chess in a blitz environment served him well.

Just two lines, Paisley and Dundee, were played in the five games as Waldron and Barker drew 1-1 after the first two and then 0-0 in the following two which forced the match-up into a do-or-die ten-minute dash in their last engagement.

Barker, a retired secondary school teacher, capitalised on weak reading by the post man in the first round where the game should have been a draw, but the more experienced player was able to pounce on and win in the end game. Then Waldron bounced back with a fine victory but missed what would have been a remarkable and decisive win, also in the ending.

Barker was however not to be phased and came back well to add another triumph to the Three-Move tournament he carted off late last year.

In the semi-finals, Barker defeated Dennis Doughlin 1-0 while Waldron advanced with a bye.
