IL State Tornament 2006

Postby Alex_Moiseyev on Sun Apr 02, 2006 11:45 pm

Just back from Marion. Mr. Ellison promised me to email full complete results tomorrow. This year we had 41 players from 7 (?) states, including World, National and States Champions.

This year competition in MAster Division was very high. After losing round #2 to Michael Holmes, I find myself in position #8, which was a quite unusual for me and remind some tournaments from my "romantic period" in checkers: 1996-1998. This forced me to win almost all other games to the rest in order to win a tourney.

I finished with 22 points, Michael Holmes was second with 17 points, Richard Beckwith - 3rd (17 points), and Larry Keen was 4th (17 points). I would like to congratulate G. Ellison for winning a title of State Champ this year.

We also had several young players in this tournament, including Gogo and Josh. I played one round with Josh Armstrong and was lucky to win both games in new opening SKUNK.

Many thanks everyone who ordered SIXTH during the tournament.

Full complete results will be tomorrow.

I don't have full results, but Top 10 places (including honor point tie-breakers) were 1. Alex Moiseyev 22 2. Michel Holmes 17 3. Rich Beckwith 17 4. Larry Keen 17 5. Don West 16 6. Mike Fulkerson 16 7. Ted Meriwether 16 8. Gene Lindsay 15 9. Josh Armstrong 15 10. Gene Ellison (IL champ).

There were 41 players total, 2 classes -- this was the State tournament, not the 101.

I hope everyone arrived home safely amidst the storms. I understand western Tennessee had storm damage. I arrived in Decatur, IL last evening to learn tornadoes were already on the ground in Springfield and heading my way! but storm subsided somewhat.

I already corrected the title of topic.

I was very lucky to drive "through narrow window" where tornado didn't have affect at the time when I was on the road. It is like in checkers - do right things on right time !

Congratulations Alex,Ken and Gene Ellison It was a very tuff tournament and I had lots of fun. Also there was lots of surprises. The location in the mall is very nice to have. Lots of space to play in and lots of good food. Everything was perfect, except that dumb auction.. but other then that it was fun, thanks Gene.

M. Fulkerson finished top of the A Class ahead of Master Gene Lindsay and ahead of 2200 WCDF rated N. Gogo. Fulkerson is a 'mediocre' kurnik online player (he plays slow games, around 20m games which is slow for online). I think this is more proof of my past assumptions that most kurnik online players are Majors with some Masters :)

Yes, Mike did pretty well that tournament but you see internet is different from face to face for many different reasons, and many people have argued that point, You and the rest in kurnik have to go and learn that point before they argue your point.

Igor,

this is obviously very outstanding result, and I want to congratulate Mike with such a wonderful performance ! But the fact is - he've got 86 honor points, which indicates an average result of his opponents - 12.3 points. He did extremely well against his "average opponent",but ...

Gene Lindsay, who scored less number of points, got 101 honor points, which average his opponent around 14.4 points. Unlucky  Gene Lindsay lost two games to me in round #6, because we played one opening very well covered in SIXTH, and I recently (few days prior tournament) reviewed this article. :P

So ... we should probably say, that getting some medium luck, Mike level gets close to the low Master bareer. In other hands we should say - if Gene Lindsay doesn't have any luck, he also gets close to this bareer but from higher level !

I am very confident - Mike should be OK in Major Division, and more likely finish with more than 50% points.

Also, I understand - you are talking about FAC (fast checkers), and we don't have a National tournament this year by this kind of game.

Calculation

Postby Michael Holmes on Tue Apr 04, 2006 12:24 pm

Shr., the honor points are calculated by the number of rounds played in the tournament minus 1! Which means that 86 points are divided by 6 and not 7 and 101 poinst is divided by 6 and not 7 and 104 points is divided by 6 and not seven. Obviously by reading the start of this paragraph you have realized that when the honor points are calculated the lowest score between all of your opponents is not used.

You probably right. In this case "average points" for Mike Fulkerson opponents are 14.3, for Gene Lindsay - 16.8, for Larry Keen - 15.5, for Richard Beckwith - 17, and for you - 17.2 Very impressive.

You played with all tops and well deserved for the silver medal !

"Average points" of my opponents in this ty is 16.2

Mike,

While I never heard the official story, I assume those were local news reporters -- they often show up at these Illinois tournaments.
