Hello Jan, Danny, and Liam:

Thank you very much for your Happy Birthday wishes!

I turned 61 years old today. The number 61 is very special to me.

It was in the year 1961 when I watched my first baseball game and became a baseball fan. That was the year that Roger Maris was hitting all of those home runs. He instantly became my favorite baseball player, and he ended the season with 61 home runs.

I also read my first Checker book in 1961, after visiting the Library at the Norfolk Naval Base. It was a book by Millard Hopper, and if my memory was correct, the title of the book was "How To Win At Checkers." I became instantly fascinated by his treatment of the Cross opening and all of the traps that lay therein.

The number 61 also happens to be a prime number, and as a "math person", I tend to be very fond of prime numbers. I intend to celebrate by making this a "prime" day and year of my life.

Thanks again for your Happy Birthday wishes.

Best Wishes,

Dennis Cayton

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY" Dennis,

I tried to call you to wish you a happy birthday but kept getting the ringing of a FAX machine. I double checked the number and found that I had two of the numbers reversed. When I finely dialed it correctly a lady answered the phone.(recorded message)

I hope it's been a good one..."Pal"

Hello "Pal",

Thank you very much for your Happy Birthday wishes and for your phone message, which I did not receive until after coming home from a tutoring session.

Yes, I even tutored on my birthday. That's how much I love my work.

I am very sorry I was not at home to receive your message. I tend to be a difficult person to reach by phone.

Even when I am home, I often spend several hours in a row, conceiving and designing instructional methods and materials for teaching my students' math lessons. As I am doing so, I often take my phone off the hook, so I can concentrate more effectively.

I also like to take a nap every day if I can, usually between tutoring sessions. I take my phone off the hook during my naps as well.

In my "old age", relatively speaking, of course, I have become more of an email person than a telephone person. Although I have a Facebook account, I rarely use it, as some of the privacy issues make me nervous.

Enough of my rambling.

Thanks again for your Happy birthday wishes and your telephone message!

All The Best,

Dennis Cayton

Hello Bill Salot,

Thank you very much for your Happy Birthday wishes.

I know you must be older than I am.

When I was only 14 years old, back in 1964, I started to subscribe to Elam's Checkerboard (ECB). One article which has always stuck in my mind was one you wrote yourself.

You sounded like a true veteran of the game.

Thanks again for your Happy Birthday wishes.

All The Best,

Dennis

Greetings Tommy Canning:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

I hope you have a great one and the best one ever!

Let me add that I really admire the work you did on the Barred Openings, after I "passed the baton" to anybody else who would be interested.

At that time, I was suffering from "Checker Burnout" from those "Compilations" I was preparing back in the 1990s.

This was right about the time when computers were beginning to have a major impact upon postal checkers.

At that time, I had virtually no computer literacy.

Even today, my computer literacy is way below average in relation to my peers.

I do not own, nor have I ever owned, or ever used, one single checker computer program.

I wouldn't even know how to download one of these programs.

I plan to hire a private computer tutor soon to help me get my computer skils "up to speed."

In the meantime, I plan to order a copy of YOUR Compilation very soon.

It will be the first checker book in my "new" library, ever since I had to sell my entire checker library a few years ago.

Your book is at the top of my list.

In the meantime, please forgive the tangent and allow me to return to the subject at hand by wishing you once again a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

All The Best,

Dennis Cayton
