CONGRATULATIONS to Ron King. I guess this year's triumph at the Irish Open may be his greatest triumph in tournament play here in Europe, considering the enourmous strenghts of this year's event.

Also congratulations to my friend Bernard Coll, who won the Seniors.
i always thought he is a senior force.

Congratulations to John McElhone, the new Irish champion, who outperformed some grandmasters and many very, very strong masters.
Congratulations to Michael Shabshai, who showed that his fine Performances in Prague and Beijing were no one-day wonders.
Also congratulations to my friend Filip, who is a fine player and will be a growing force in the future.
There are a lot of young talents like Filip in Europe, and they also deserve their chances.

I think this tournament confirmes the Beijing verdict, that Checkers/Draughts power changes hands from the anglophone countries to the rest of the world in this decade.
The next match USA vs. Ireland & Britian will not be the international match anymore.
There are others who are as good if not better.

I am looking forward to see the QT, with all five prize winners, Borghetti, the Durdyevs and may the best man or woman win.

Ron King still can bite. He sharpend his teeth for the QT, but I know that others still have resources as well.

Does anyone knows the final standings in Irish Open 2010 in all 3 Divisions, including points and prize information ???

Shoudl we have the same level of fantastically poor and dummy coverage for QT as well ?

Photos, list of participants, pairing ... very hard to do and almost impossible ... 23rd century technology ... Grrr.

Perhaps next time WCDF should include in bid definition such things as website support and if bidder can't provide it - bid must be rejected.

Yes,

a web-coverage like we have it for the German Open, with daily standings and a few pictures shortly after the event or during the event would be very much appreciated.

There are even pairing programs that provide the possibilty of directly reporting to the internet.
So technically that is not even possible, but in fact quite easy to do.

On the other hand, the tight schedule with 6 games that may each last 4-5 or even more hours a day do not give the players to do that service.
I wonder why there is no assistant referee to do that.

In Prague 2005 we had a less tight schedule, with planned round times and a maximum duration of each game 2 hours, ie 4 hours per round.
So that the players and the referees had enough time to provide Information.
I can understand that the players themselved are to tired too sent any reports.

In Beijing 2008 I had the priviledge to update the results each day, also to make pictures and daily articles for the daily bulletin of the WMSG.

That was very hard, with 8 games a day, myself being a player, and I promise that I will never do that again!

On some days I got no lunch, and some players, even those who knew that I had to update the results, complaint about me being late for the round/game.

Anyway, I strongly recommend for any event to have internet coverage, provided by an assistant referee.

Look at the Women's Worlschampionship in Draughts 100, or the Veterans European Championships in Draughts 100:

The web-coverage should include:
1. all results at least on a daily basis,
2. a complete table with the standings in all sections
3. possible pairings for the next round,
4. pictures of the event, maybe even videos.

and, as I am very demanding:

5. the games (the referees should keep the score sheets and another assistant should enter it into Aurora Borealis, TurboDambase, or even Checker Board during the rounds. All those fine programs and many more provide possibilities to store and publish the games, and maybe also to add diagrams or to display them all on the net with an interactive html board.) For that purpose a further assistant is badly needed.

I agree completely, Ingo. There's no good reason not to have regular Internet coverage for major tournaments, or even for smaller events as long as a wireless connection is available. As the German Open and other tournaments have shown, the technology is already out there, and the only real obstacle is the unwillingness of some players to learn how to use it.

An interesting subject here and some great ideas arising. I'm fully for it, just like I'm all for everyone playing their games with a clock You'd think something that simple would be easy....

The problem I see is that I've spoken about this for the past two years (within the Executive Board) but I've never got anyone to take it on! Personally I'm not sufficiently computer literate, nor am I in Dublin - I'm four hours drive away! I have to rely on someone else to help out here but there's no-one who has answered that call. There is much work to be done, but very few workers. There are people in Dublin who may have the time, but having the necessary equipment, software, and being competent are other issues.

Overnight standing - R. King & Bashim Durdyev 7pts, S. Mc Cosker & M. Borchetti 6pts, and a number of players on 5 pts that includes Myles Hannigan. I'm told Ron King played Amangul Durdyeva this morning and won both games. Bashim Durdyev won both games against his brother Bagtiyar, while Mc Cosker and Hannigan drew their games. Amangul came back in the second round to get a win and draw against an Irish player.

The Womens event is a three way contest. Kim Willis lost 3-1 against Jan Mortimer, and also lost 3-1 against Toyeva Hermangul (Turknenistan).

The youth event has just two players, both from Turkmenistan - Maksat Durdyev, Gochakov Gochmyrat.

Hi ..........Everybody not back long from Dublin ,very tired but glad to get back,just waiting for the wife to get back from Spain.Jan and Kim were good company and Kims having her birthday in Dublin.I t was great to meet Hoja and the Durdyeyev family again (all 7 or 8 of them)they had intended playing the Open also but got held in transit somewhere ....................also nice to meet all the rest from all around the world that id not seen before,Italy,Germany,Israel,and especially Filip Kareta and Jaroslav Tichy from Czech who we had met in Prague in 2005 very nice lads.Unfortunately Filip had an operation to shorten one of his legs recently and was on crutches. Joker Brian Kilgour from Scotland remarking during the presentation "i never seen a player getting presented with a cup and A PAIR OF CRUTCHES BEFORE?? lol.

QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT DUBLIN 2010 Referee John Reade assisted by Graham Young........

It was certainly one of the most peaceful Irish Opens id ever seen,not a scowl or row to be got.

Some results..................I noted some games off the playing sheets before i came away today.Frank Moran had the Black Hole 1014 2217 913 with the guy from Israel Mr Shabshai and was losing the weak red side in the 1st game when he played the wrong order.

Ron King and Amangul had the Gemini 2 1015 2319 1116 Amangul played the 2420 attack (see my book page 60-61)and had Ron in lots of trouble in the first.....on the rack!!

The two Czech lads has the Wilderness 2 913 2318 1116 Filip handling the white pieces in the 1st game but Jaroslav may have played into a pp loss "im not sure of my notes on this" but however I think Filip may have allowed him back into the pp draw some moves later? I dont know how it finished as we went home shortly after.

As far as i remember the scores were something like that.

I can well understand your frustration at so little news coming out and there have been some very good suggestions as how to fix it in future events.Hopefully we can do something in that direction.

Just a question. Does the WCDF have a ruling on players' being in a designated area after their first game is completed? I believe a player vanished from the hall yesterday on completion of first game, possibly gone to their bedroom, while playing partner was seen having a smoke outside main door. Surely this anomally should not be permitted??!!

4.12 Players are not allowed to leave the `playing venue` without permission from the tournament controller. The playing venue is defined as the playing area, rest rooms, refreshment area, area set aside for smoking and other places as designated by the tournament controller.

Hi Bern, first of all congrats on winning the senior section Irish Open well done and well deserved indeed.
Apparently two of the ladies had a bit of a spat so John Reade has his work cut out even on the first day........i did caution that a good strong hand would be needed in this high charged everything at stake Qualifing Ty,i surely didnt expect it would be the ladies who would be kicking up some dust first day.LOL
