Unpublished Tinsley Game

Postby liam stephens on Mon Jan 11, 2010 12:59 pm

Having had a little time to spare during the recent inclement weather, I opened an old box containing maybe a hundred or more games and other items in manuscript all destined for the scrap heap. Fortunately, I found an unpublished game of Dr.Tinsley there, played in one of his exhibition matches during his visits to Britain and Ireland in 1957/58. This game was played against W T Dixon of Aylesbury and concluded in a draw. The Opening was 11-16, 22-18, 8-11 and the game is annotated by Dixon in very neat handwriting.

This will be published in a future issue of the IDA Newsletter, so don’t forget to tell your friends you saw it there.

There was also a cook by AG Huggins on the 10-14, 23-19, 11-16 Opening, which he used in postal play scoring a win against J Pirie of Scotland in 1947. I hope to publish this game also.

ANOTHER TREAT IN STORE

Just found another 2 unpublished Tinsley games. These were played against W. W. Coleman of London in 1958. The opening was 11-16, 22-18, 7-11 in both games, with Coleman playing the Black side and ending in 2 draws. (Tinsley had beaten Sammy Cohen on this Opening in the 1958 British Championship)

In a manuscript page by Coleman there is also supplementary play and notes by
Dr Tinsley to his win against Derek Oldbury in the 1958 British Championship.
The game continues on from note A-1 on page 6 of CTTW to its conclusion with annotations by Tinsley. Apparently he missed a win later in the game but Oldbury went into a second loss. These notes and supplementary play are unpublished as far as I am aware, and will be shown in a future edition of the IDA Newsletter.
Incidentally the game is shown as arising from 10-15, 22-17, 9-13 Opening.

In the Oct. 2007 ACFB, in John Walcott's obituary, I published these three games. I don't think they were mentioned in R. Pask’s The Legendary MFT. I think I found them in the OCA archive:

9-13 23-18 10-15 26-23 6-10 30-26 1-6 18-14 10-17 21-14 15-18 22-15 11-18 26-22 12-16 22-15 7-10 14-7 3-26 31-22 6-10 27-23 8-12 23-18 5-9 25-21 2-7 24-20 7-11 29-25 10-14 18-15 11-18 20-11 18-23 11-7 4-8 7-3 23-26 28-24 8-11 3-8 11-15 8-3 12-16 3-7 26-31 32-28 16-19 24-20 31-27 20-16 19-23 16-12 23-26 12-8 26-30 8-3 15-19 7-11 19-23 11-15 23-26 15-10 27-23 10-17 23-19 3-7 19-15 7-2 draw, M. I see that this game is also in the OCA, and it may not be mentioned in R. Pask's book:

[Event "Barbados exhibition 1986"]
[Black "King, R."]
[White "Tinsley, M.F."]
[Result "0-1"]
1. 9-13 24-19 2. 5-9 28-24 3. 11-15 22-18 4. 15x22 25x18 5. 10-15 18x11 6. 8x15 19x10 7. 6x15 30-25 8. 3-8 23-18 9. 15x22 25x18 10. 7-10 26-23 11. 10-15 18x11 12. 8x15 23-19 13. 15-18 29-25 14. 2-7 31-26 15. 4-8 24-20 16. 9-14 20-16 17. 1-5 26-22 18. 18-23 27x9 19. 5x14 32-28 20. 7-10 0-1

For any that are interested, Liam donated a copy of the original to be exhibited on the Online Museum Of Checkers History.
