In this Topsy Turvy* year my computer crashed recently, so I was unable to prepare a Christmas quiz. However, the following question may keep readers amused during the festive season.

How many Draughts or Checkers books can you find where the title on the spine is the wrong way round, reading from bottom to top. I have found 5 examples.

Wishing everyone a

One reader said he couldn't find any. !!

There are at least 9. In no particular order:

Lees Guide
Tescheleit's Masterplay
Anthony Bishop's Encyclopedia
Alex Moiseyev's Sixth
Ryan's Championship Checkers Simplified
Atwell's Scientific Draughts
Daily Express - Draughts Simplified
Draughts and Backgammon by Berkeley
Everybody's Guide to Chess and Draughts by Peachey

Not wromg, just different way around. 99% books published in former Soviet Union and today in Russia have title on spine this way. However ... I have couple 10x10 books prined in Netherland, where title appeared the same way as in Sixth !

Recently in 2009 I helped my friend in mind from Croatia to prepare and publish his classic 10x10 ending book "1000 mini". When I submitted PDF file to American publishing company AuthorHouse, title was printed the way it's done for Sixth. I was very surprised when after final processing PDF file, they returned it to me with different design !

After discussing this mattert with my friend from Croatia, we decided do not change anything and the title of his book on spine is printed in different way than Sixth !

You can find (and order) his book on Amazon.com. Author name - Miljenko Lepsic, book title - "1000 mini".

His book is "2 languages" book and John Acker was an Englsih editor. All text in "1000 mini" book (beside diagrams) is duplicated on Russian and English.

Regards,

Alex

Thank you Alex for that interesting information on the Miljenko Lepsic book.

Actually the Sixth is in very good company with Lees Guide, the number one best selling Draughts/Checkers book of all time, I believe.

"Vive la difference" as they say.

Straying slightly away from the topic, (probably should go in Broken Boards) I have another book in my music collection where title on spine also reads from bottom to top. This book is titled:

Jazz - Les Incontournables

It is in French and contains articles on, and photographs of, many famous jazz personalities, including Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Charles Mingus and many others.

Regards - Liam Stephens.
