Christmas Quiz 2008

Postby liam stephens on Sun Dec 21, 2008 10:34 am

Some readers told me my last Christmas quiz was too difficult, so here is an easy one, for this year.
All you have to do is fill in the blanks. It’s a cinch, and one that you soon will solve.

Incidentally, it’s not by me, but by George Smith, a former secretary of the London Draughts Association, who would entertain us at St Bride’s with his “Saints and Sinners” feature of which this was one example. I think he may have had in mind those who find First Position too long or too boring. – lol

To help you clues are given in brackets after the missing word(s).

__________ (12-16 opening is called this) Jones, the Champion of ________ (11-15, 29-19, 8-11,

22-17, 11-16 opening) was playing _ ____ __ ________ (name of magazine once published by

D. E. Oldbury) with an _________ __________ (name of magazine once published by W. Ryan)

who was on holiday in ___________ ( 9-13, 22-18 opening). This visitor was renowned for the

_____ _______ (book by Tom Wiswell) his fingers seemed to possess and for the great gift of being

able to play _____ _____ (book by N. Banks) .

Having made his move this ____________ (book by Hopper) expert looked up, satisfied he could soon

demonstrate _____ ____ _______ (book by Ketchum) an intriguing position by _____ _______

(book by Jensen). He humourously said “ _____ ______ ______ (book by Ryan), but his opponent

shook his head and then resigned for he could see he would soon be in a _______ ________

(B:3, BK: 32, WK: 18, 19. White to play and win) loss.

1 House Point for each blank correctly filled in.

NAME ………………………………………..(Saint or Sinner)
