"CBW"--"Checker Coupon"--answer

Postby Mr. Checkers on Wed Sep 20, 2006 11:09 am

 It came into existence in the late 1970's with a listing of checker books forsale that numbered over 1,000. "Checker Book World" advertised its wares in the Checker Players Delight. Its rivals at that time were Clayton Beebe and Tom Wiswell. If you wrote to "CBW" requesting a book listing one was sent out to you immediately along with their business card, which had a couple of nice checker sayings on it. More importantly though it was also a "Coupon", which could be redeemed. "Checker Trivia" question of the Day"? What could it be redeemed for? (Cont.)

Was it for a hug? I have one in my desk drawer at home (the coupon, not the hug)

 You are absolutely correct Whitefork. What better way to start ones day than with a "hug". Many years ago I was watching a TV show which concerned itself with the treatment of the elderly. Doctors found that residents that received lots of "hugs" did much better emotionally and physically; plus they lived longer. So with that in mind our first business card was designed as a coupon (for the purpose of receiving a kind and friendly "hug"), which could be redeemed anywhere--(at the mall was a good place) and it was a good way to meet other nice people. P.S. We waved all responsibility regarding incidents which occurred as a result of players coming home with lipstick on their collars.
