Ben Boland's--"Checkers for the Millions"--1939 and A. J. Mantell's--"The Game of Checkers"--1941. Both men were good friends. Mantell finished first in the minor division at the 6th Am. Ty.--1924. And a very young Willie Ryan finished 3rd in that division. Mantell's imput can be seen in Ryan's 1940 MEC. Ryan and Mantell were both from the Bronx and they played at local checker clubs there. It has been said that Mantell was Joe Schwartz's mentor in checkers? (Cont.)
