Thank you very much Richard.

The favorites GM Scarpetta, GM Francis and GM Morrison are already on top of the field. All three have played Ron King in title matches before, Sergio winning the last QT 2011 and having drawn the title match with Ron King in 2012 is now in front... Jack Francis the winner of the national championships of Barbados, defeating Ron King this year in the final round coming from behind. And Jim Morrison strong as always.

No clear trend in the Women World Championships, but so far only one round played. Favorites likely to be local champion Wilma Joyanne Branch and WMSG winner Nadiya Chyzhevska from the Ukraine in her attempt to take the double crown (3-move and GAYP). But a few new names may spoil the party for them...

In the fourth round I beat Jack Francis 3-1 with a nice shot in the second game (anyway, I had a man up).

#1. S. Scarpetta vs J. Francis, Rd. 4
Image
White to move and draw.

See diagram #1. Jack played here losing 13-9? and got into beautiful shot: 23-27, 32x23. 15-19, 6x8, 19x26, 30x23, 3x26 RW

16-12 instead 13-9 was a man down draw due to bridge formation and 2nd upcoming white King.

Nice win though ... and extremely important which may identify a winner of event.

BTW. It is also important to mention that in position on diagram #2 (see below), Jack played weak and suspicious 24-19? instead 32-27 recommended by PP

#2. White to move

After day three Sergio Scarpetta kept the lead. Now on 20 points he is 3 points ahead of Jack Francis on 17, while Jim Morrison is 3rd on 14 points, still undefeated.

At the Women's Nadiya and Wilma are still tied on top.

Greetinx from Europe at night,

and a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Richard Beckwith.

Thanks, Ingo. And with one day to go, it is not too much a surprise that Sergio and Nadiya appear to be in command.

Jim Morrison doesn't give you much to work with and is extremely difficult to beat in GAYP. Both Holmes and Francis however have the very aggressive, risky playing styles and while this can work well on the weaker ones, a top of the line grandmaster like Sergio will completely be all over it and punish the play if it is not sound. I think sometimes you need to realize who you are playing and play in a way that will most likely get you the most points, it may mean playing more cautious.

This is not aggressive style, this is super-ambitious style. Really aggressive style had R. King and E. Lowder.

Congratulations to Sergio on nice lead.

Betting on Jim.

Good catch, Alex. Of course they are not tied (point totals are still correct) -- that's what I get for trying to do reports late at night!
I was looking forward to Nadiya and Wilma meeting head-to-head, which they did yesterday. First game was a standard Old 14th with a long ending that neither gained any advantage. Second game- Wilma got into earlier trouble, lost a piece, and Nadiya nailed down 4 kings against 3.
