So I am assuming no ACF membership will be required for the Amish people? Everybody who plays in tournaments gets included in the ratings, ACF or not, but at this point half the people in the ratings are not even ACF members. I am all for including them for a better turnout and more exciting tournament, but at this point ACF membership seems to be a joke lol.

I think Jason has been working hard to line up 2012 PA checker tournament and should be complimented on his efforts. I for one and being a PA resident would be for a Friday/Saturday tournament with the hope of attracting Amish players. Read John Acker's comments about Amish players at IN tourney. King from Lancaster is very good and I have played him. He was willing to come to Dalton OH for a checker tourney which is a far distace from Lancaster. It goes without saying that he won easily at Dalton. Jay I think they would play and Laverne and the current PA champ would certainly be in attendance. Also I have attended recent VA and NC tournies and players there seemed in favor of tryng to attend 2012 PA tourney. (Many NC players favor Friday/Saturay formats.

Regarding the Amish at the upcoming PA. Ty....
I questioned three different Lancaster County Amish businessmen this very week if they believed any Amish would compete in a tournament.
Several things....
First, 2 of the three said they enjoy playing Checkers, one said he enjoyed "pushing buttons", a term I have heard before used to described playing the game.
Second, all 3 stated "I don't think so" when I asked if they were willing to play in a tournament that required an entry fee, and payed cash prizes. One said it goes against their religion.
I did not push to ask if they would donate any winnings to a worthy cause, and I certainly did not use the argument that they are "completely wrong".
I cannot bring myself to ask them to ignore hundreds of years of religious doctrine and consider the playing of organized Checkers as hard work and serious respectable business. My own personal standards would prevent me from doing this.....I would find it insulting if I were on their end of this.
I, myself, do consider the game to be hard work, and serious respectable business, but I have different standards than the Amish. Nobody is right and/or wrong here. The Amish do play, and play to win. They will, and do indeed, "get together" and play with a bunch of people,....Dave King(RIP), an Amishman, once (and probaly more) had a gathering at his home, attended by Earl Hangen (who invited me, but I could not attend), Jim Reed (RIP), Bert VanderPool, (Mail players will remember him) and Jerry Lattimer (another Mail player), and several other Amish... they all played against each other and "had fun" as Earl put it.
But, to compete in a tournament that pays cash prizes for winning is too close to gambling for them, and God bless them.....


I also asked one Mennonite the same questions, and got the same response....

I have looked back at some of the results of Tournaments that included the Amish that were posted...the Indiana Ty for one, and, none of them included cash prizes.....Can anyone dispute this ?
Jason, try to get in touch with Laverne, he might be able to shed some additional light on this....before scheduling the Tourney for Lancaster County with the purpose of attracting Amish and "striking out".

Your experiences within the Indiana Amish Community aside,....
Jason , MORE THAN LIKELY, will have trouble attracting the PA. Lancaster Amish to compete in a tourney, even if he holds the tourney in Lancaster County.
I am giving info so that he might want to consider how much effort he points in that direction.
I have given my thoughts, and been on Lancaster County farms, and asked questions, as I have posted......and, even if you don't get my message, I believe that Jason will.

Not sure how this would work out for the PA tourney, but at the Amish tournament in Dalton, OH a couple years ago, there was a "freewill offering" to cover the costs of food etc. So there is some precedent for spending money at a tournament, even if some do object to entry fees.

I appreciate the responses and especially the leg work you've done Jay.
Right now it doesn't seem like anyone has a problem with the 3rd weekend of June so I'm planning on holding it at the high school (simply for cost reasons), but still undecided on which 2 days.

It doesn't seem like there's an objection to holding it on a Friday from the majority of last years participants, but it also doesn't seem like it would attract any new players either. My personal preference is going to be saturday, just because my vacation time is limited this year. I called the number I had for LaVerne earlier this week, but got a voicemail and haven't received a call back yet.
Of course I probably picked a terrible time of year to start to organize this, but I'd like to get the announcement in the February bulletin.


I've updated the thread to contain a poll. I'll finalize the plans next week.

I am in favor playing Sat-Sun but it won't be a huge problem and tragedy for me to start on Friday if it works better for other people and business.

I also don't think it's too earlier to start As more and aggressive advertisement - as better. With new location we can try to attract more south and east players from VA, WV, NY, NJ etc ... maybe even NC, TN and KY ... ohhh unrealistic dreams

Per my and other people suggestions Don DeWeber changed in 2011 the terms of PA State fund and hopefully this year we should have better annual interest withdraw.

Jason, I am in favor of having it played on Sat-Sun, but Friday and Saturday would work for me too. Moving it more east last year got an increase of about 6 or 7 players I believe from the 2010 year so I think that is a great idea. The Philadelphia and whole Delaware Valley has a very high population of people so good chance we could even draw a few new players.

Jason, whichever way you go is fine with me. I would prefer Friday and Saturday for PA tourney because I still think it would bring more players. So apparently there has been changes that have occurred regarding the 2012 PA tournament. First, I have no problem with the tournament fee being raised. I also don't mind the fact it will be moved back to Carlisle. But this next part is what I don't understand:

There will be 4 divisions with a maximum of 8 players each. Division placement will be based on players performance in other tournaments. Each division will be round robin for a total of 7 rounds with 2 hours allotted for each round. There will be a half hour between rounds and an hour and a half break for lunch.

Classes of players will be,
1. Minor, 16 years old or younger. Will be playing GAYP.
2. Minor, for those that have never won a Minor tournament anywhere. 3 move.
3. Major, for those that have never won a Major or "Class 'B' " tournament anywhere. 3 move.
4. Master, for those that have never won a Master tournament. 3 move.
5. Grand Master, for those that have taken first place in a Masters tournament before. 3 move.
Everyone will pay the same 50 dollar registration fee (If paid before June or $60 after that.) and be a member of the ACF. ACF dues may be paid on site. Only eight players per class, so get your money in right away. To receive your prize money, you must be signed into your correct class, be present, let all players finish, all players are required to record all games and turn a copy into the scorekeeper.

I understand wanting to have separate divisions based on skill, but 4 divisions seems to be way too much. The PA normally draws 10 to 15 people at most. If we have 4 divisions we will have 3 to 5 players per division. To me there is no fun in that. The Master division seems like it will consist of me, Rich, and Laverne, and Alex. But with the possibility of Alex not showing up, I would only be competing against 2 players.

I propose that we reduce this to two divisions only. If 25 to 30 people show up, then maybe 4 would work, but if it is only 10 to 15 players then I think we should shorten it with two divisions.
