Carl Reno, "The Work of the Pentium"

Postby JohnAcker on Wed Jun 15, 2011 4:08 pm

Hi folks,

Carl Reno is not planning to reprint his excellent Go-As-You-Please primer The Work of the Pentium, and has given me permission to reprint and distribute it. For those of you unfamiliar with the book, it includes lots of Carl's cooks on most of the standard GAYP lines, including a section on the "Double Book" (9-14 22-17 11-15 25-22 8-11) unrivaled in checkers literature. The layout is similar to Master Play, with the trunk and variations on the left-hand page and Carl's annotations on the right-hand page. All told there is about 100 pages of play (8.5x11" pages), much of it unique to the book.

Since I would need to do the printing locally, I'd like to gauge potential interest in the book beforehand. The printing prices go down slightly for larger orders, so if there's enough interest to sell 10 copies I could set the price at $25 per copy; if there were enough interest for 20 or more copies then I could reduce the per-copy price to $20. Any profits would go to the youth checkers fund, which helps buy equipment for scholastic checkers programs and offers partial tournament scholarships to young players who would otherwise face financial hardship.

You don't have to send any money now, but if you'd be interested in a copy of Carl's book, please post here or email me at acker.jt@gmail.com. I would have these at the Nationals this year (July 25-30, Medina, OH), and could also have some copies at the Southern tournament next month as well.

John, I am interested. Will it be on an easy link from your website, like Basic Checkers?--George Hay

George, this one will be on a much smaller scale, so I would be distributing the books myself instead of going through Amazon or CreateSpace. But I would be willing to calculate postage costs for players who won't be at the tournaments I mentioned.

Just bumping this to the top-- if there is enough interest then I will prepare a batch in time for the Southern States Tournament next weekend.

An update: the book is at the printer, and copies should be ready by the end of the week. The cost will be $25 for copies delivered in person (I'll be at the Nationals, the Moiseyev-Borghetti match, and the Ohio State Tournament this year) and $30 for copies shipped to US addresses. Currently I anticipate having about 15 copies available at the Nationals, and would be glad to set aside a copy for anyone who requests it.

JohnAcker, I just received my copy of THE WORK OF THE PENTIUM by Carl W. Reno today. Thumbing through it and reading some of the comments, I see that Mr. Reno has put in a tremendous amount of work into this book. I see it covers the Souter Hay Line and many other GAYP lines of play. In fact, those who put down GAYP will have to contend with this book! Reno's Improved and Corrected 2nd Edition kind of reminds me of Anderson's 2nd Edition. The book itself is high quality made up of letter size pages with a plastic spiral binding, just like a cook book. The Carl Reno Cookbook! Thank you for keeping THE WORK OF THE PENTIUM in print. --George Hay
