Inishowen International Festival of Draughts

The “Inishowen International Festival of Draughts” which takes place this week in the Gateway Hotel, Buncrana, will be the largest event of its kind in Europe this year and will have a number of components to its schedule, incorporating the All-Ireland Open Draughts Championships, the World Women’s Championship match between defending champion Patricia Breen ( Ireland ) and Challenger Amagul Durdvyeva (Turkmeinistan ), and an exhibition match between World Champion Alex Moiseyev (U.S.A ) and Former British and Irish champion Grandmaster Hugh Devlin from Letterkenny. This major event is being promoted by the Inishowen Draughts Club in collaboration with the Irish Draughts Association and The NorthWest Draughts Federation.

The format of the festival ensures that it caters for all players, including men, women and youth events and has a local, national, cross-border and international dimension to it.
All participants will be playing for a total of €10,000, in prize money and a souvenir of Inishowen will accompany each prize.

The majority of participants who will travel from England, Scotland, Wales, Barbados, U.S.A., Turkmenistan and Southern Ireland and will arrive at the Gateway Hotel this Friday where they will be made welcome by members from the Inishowen club. All players from the Northern Counties will probably arrive on Saturday morning in time for the opening ceremony which will take place at 10.00 am. The 20 game world Women’s championship match will continue over 5 days with 4 games played each day, while the All-Ireland open championships will also finish on Wednesday following 5 days play. The exhibition match will take place on a number of evenings during this period. Close Circuit Television will relay these two matches to the main hall where the public are welcome to relax and watch the games in progress.
On Tuesday, 30th., which is the fourth day of play, a special “Afternoon with Alex” has been arranged, where all school pupils, teachers and parents can meet the world champion, talk about his exploits in the draughts world and have a game of draughts with him.
This will commence at 1.30 p.m. and finish with light refreshments for everyone.

In addition to the series of events taking place during the day, there will also be a series of activities arranged for the evenings. On Saturday, 27th. there will be an “Adult evening with Alex” at 8 pm. in the Foyle Suite, followed by a buffet dance where everyone will take their wives or partners for a good old Irish social evening. At 7.30pm on Sunday evening the exhibition match will commence and finish around 10.30pm. On Monday at 7.30 pm. The Irish Draughts Association will hold their Annual General Meeting which will be followed at 9.30 pm. by the Annual General meeting of the World Checkers and Draughts Federation. On Tuesday at 7.30 pm. the exhibition match will continue until around 10.30 pm. while on Wednesday evening the Presentation of Prizes will take place, involving the presentation ceremony for the winner of the Women’s World Championship match and prize winners in the All-Ireland Open Draughts Championships. This will bring the ” Inishowen International Festival of Draughts” to a conclusion.
We do hope everyone enjoys their time in Buncrana and we do ask our local players and draughts enthusiasts to make sure that all our visitors experience the hospitality, homely atmosphere and light hearted humour of the Donegal people. We also want to thank all our sponsors for their never ending support as without their help this event would not have taken place.

Secretary, Inishowen Draughts Club and P.R.O. Irish Draughts Association.
