2016 - THE PROBLEM COMPOSING YEAR IN REVIEW

Postby Bill Salot on Wed Jan 11, 2017 5:58 am

Congratulations to Roy Little on his 3rd consecutive Problemist of the Year title. It was his most dominant year yet. Of the 5 completed Unofficial World Championship Checker Problem Composing contests in 2016, he won 3 and was runner-up in 2. This does not include the results of Contest 31, Part 1, which won't be announced until completion of Part 2.

Ed Atkinson and Jim Loy also competed in all 6 contests, and each won one. Bill Salot competed in all 6, and Louis Cowie in 2, each without winning.

Although anyone in the world may enter their original, unpublished problems in these bi-monthly contests, relatively few so far have been willing to do so. It is a small, but not exclusive club. Please join us.

To compete often, patience and compositional versatility are needed. The 6 contest themes in 2016 spanned Buried 2-for-1s; Deferred Triple Jumps; Two-Piece Pitches; Starry Struggles; Early First Position; and Escapes. The theme will change to complement entries of newcomers.

We continue to generate contest statistics over time. Participation has been fairly steady with some ebb and flow:

Year...Problems/Contest...Votes/Contest...Visitors/Contest

2012............3.6...................19.9..................no data
2013............4.8...................17.7..................no data
2014............4.7...................17.8...................304.7
2015............4.2...................15.8...................322.6
2016............4.3...................17.3...................313.7
